Mayor Bloomberg’s Geek Squad - NYTimes.com

How does this compare with what newspapers have at their disposal?

Big screen in Nashville

I was fascinated by the big screen that I encountered in the lobby of the Courtyard by Marriott where we stayed last weekend in Nashville, TN. It offered a number of options for weather, eating and some news, all from USA Today. The eating links were local, and so was the weather, but the news was not - nothing about Nashville and non connection to the local newspaper. The print newspaper was not available at all at the hotel.
What's wrong with this picture for newspapers? A lot.

Weather

With European forecasters investing 10 times as much in their computer capacities as in the US, and with the successes they've achieved in forecasting better in the US than the US does, what is the opportunity created for newspapers? Alliances with European forecasters?

The Professor, the Bikini Model and the Suitcase Full of Trouble - NYTimes.com

I wonder if the Times has any system in place to flag a story like this one for local media so that they can at least have the opportunity to mention it while it is hot? The geographical interest area for UNC at Chapel Hill is quite large and covers a lot of media from the News & Observer to WUNC to an array of radio, television and print options.

Hardball with Chris Matthews

I sure agree with this and would go even further in banning anonymity in commenting online.
